Title: Mapping and Querying Employment Discrimination Data: A First Look into Adding Visualizations to EEO-1 Survey
Author(s): Jiashen You* and Justin West
Companies: Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and U.S. EEOC
Keywords: employment data; data visualization; data mapping; employment discrimination
Abstract:

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission releases aggregate information on employment data from each of the reported establishment worksites by race, gender, occupation, and industry. Approximately 73,400 employers, representing 56.1 million employees filed EEO-1 reports in 2018. The EEOC uses these EEO-1 reports to see where companies and aggregate areas may have disparity issues across industries and occupations. In this paper, we discuss the agency’s effort in creating an EEO-1 data query and mapping tool that allows users to explore and analyze data for their own specific needs while protecting the confidential information on individuals and survey respondents. We demonstrate and explain how EEOC takes on its modernization effort in collecting, managing, and disseminating its multifaceted employment data.
