Title: Candid Insights on Becoming Tenured Faculty at a State Institution
Author(s): Michael Swartz*
Companies: University of Texas Health Science Center At Houston, School of Public Health
Keywords: Tenure and Promotion; Mentoring
Abstract:

This talk is intended for any graduate student and even junior faculty, especially anyone interested or curious about academic\faculty careers. I will give a candid discussion of lessons learned along my path to tenure and promotion to Associate professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health. I will share what I considered as I balanced teaching research and service, as well as some choices I faced along the way. I began my tenure track September 1, 2010 when I was hired in the department of Biostatistics as an Assistant professor, Tenure Track, and was successfully promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure on September 1, 2017, with strong support from the school and my dean. I will candidly entertain questions, time permitting.
