Abstract:

Bioassays are critical to the successful development of new vaccines and biologics. New assay technologies have presented the possibility of improved drug development in a more efficient manner at the cost of complexity. Efficient development and optimization of these assays requires the managing and analysis of complex data sets. An existing bottle-neck of communication between assay scientists and statisticians is data management: assay scientists are comfortable with common data tools, such as Excel, whereas statisticians rely on statistical software, such as R, to process and analyze data. Axl is an R package and Shiny application designed to automate the organization and processing of data commonly used in assay development. It establishes a standardized, easy-to-use template using Microsoft Excel for organizing raw data and associated factors from 96- and 384-well assay plates. The R package can both read from and write to the template and consistently organizes results to the tidy data format. The corresponding Shiny application provides a user-friendly interface for non-R users. Integration of axl into the development process increases efficiency and reduces costly errors.
