Abstract:

The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the quality of the debt information collected by the Spanish Survey of Household Finances (EFF). We match the information on household indebtedness provided by the EFF with administrative data from the Central Credit Register (CIR) database, which contains at the monthly level the whole universe of those outstanding loans larger than 6000 euros that individuals have with financial entities in Spain. We present the methodology developed for the crossing of both sources of information and we document several problems for their comparability that we find when doing this linkage. Using a comparable sample that controls for those limitations, we analyse the differences in the debt metrics calculated from the EFF and the CIR. Our results show that the EFF provides measures of household indebtedness very close to those that can be calculated from CIR. Besides, we study which characteristics of the debts and of the households are related to particular measurement errors or discrepancies between both data sources. Overall, these findings allow us to draw some recommendations on how the measurement of household debts might be improved in our survey
