Abstract:

Statisticians and data scientists are fortunate to have the opportunity to join a number of societies relevant to a particular application or a collection of methods. The Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) is an example of a major event where contributions for the public good are made from different sponsoring societies, corporations, organizations, committees, and sections. This panel explores the relationships between different organizations, the benefits of joining or working with each, the difference between these organizations in terms of focus, style, and size, as well as impact of the mutual relationships have on individual careers, the promotion of statistics, and their benefit to society. The question of what different societies and organizations can learn from each other in terms of membership recruitment and retention, the role of students and young professionals, conferences, publications, challenges, and opportunities will be explored.
