Address based sampling (ABS) has gained prominence over the past decade for household surveys in the U.S. ABS is not a single approach, but rather a collection of methods that use as their sampling frames databases based on U.S. Postal Service residential mailing lists. Several researchers have examined the quality of ABS frames. Additionally, much methodological development has occurred over the past few years. In this roundtable session, we will discuss the research and developments in ABS. Topics for discussion may include the history of ABS; whether variables appended by vendors to ABS frames have utility for use in selecting samples and/or in computing survey weights; data collection methods with ABS; special considerations in computing weights for ABS samples; the effects of gains in Internet and smartphone penetration on ABS methods; and recognizing when ABS should and should not be considered.
