Abstract:

Data visualization has become very important in the era of big data and is being used in almost all disciplines. Statisticians and statistical programmers continue to gain expertise in data visualization using various dynamic and interactive platforms and tools, both commercial and open source, e.g., Spotfire, Tableau, R, Python, D3.js, etc. There seems to be an ongoing concern that data visualization tools may be abused and lead to an incorrect or premature strategy. This panel will weigh in their views on the bright and the dark side of complex data visualization based on their experiences. There will be areas highlighted where data visualization can be the best resource to summarize and convey information from complex data and areas where extreme caution needs to be used along with a discussion of best practice considerations. The panel will also discuss how statisticians can dive into the data by taking advantage of multidimensional view of complex data, use of open source tools in visualization of complex safety data in healthcare for an unbiased assessment of benefit risk, and use of open source tools for effective visualization of genomics data in drug discovery.
