Abstract:

We will discuss new statistical learning methods for some applications in physics. We focus on three problems: estimating backgrounds (signal-free distributions), model independent search (finding faint, localized signals in two-sample testing) and estimating the inter-galactic medium. This is joint work with many collaborators in statistics and physics.
