This year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale who became a member of the American Statistical Association in recognition of her use of statistical analysis to improve public health. Much has changed for our profession since Florence Nightingale was invited to become a member of the ASA. Advances in science and technology and socio-political events have presented opportunities and challenges. Today, promoting the practice and profession of statistics in the emerging world of data science is an opportunity and challenge for change. This talk will look back on past challenges faced by our association as a possible roadmap to our future. We will employ text analysis approaches to explore the writings of past ASA Presidents to gain insights and look back to our future.
