The revised GAISE (Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education) College report outlined the importance of multivariate thinking as a foundation for a modern introductory statistics course. Moving beyond a comparison of two groups or two variables allows students to begin to explore key ideas of design, confounding, and causal inference that are critical when considering real world questions. In this talk, I will describe some approaches that have been used to introduce new learning outcomes consistent with the GAISE guidelines and suggest ways to build students’ multivariate thinking skills and understanding of confounding and causal inference.
