Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant health issue in the United States. One of the more common consequences of IPV, physical injury, is estimated to happen to nearly 2 out of 5 women and 1 out of 7 men. While much research has been conducted on the role of social determinants on IPV-related physical injuries between heterosexual pairings, only 3% of studies on IPV have investigated determinants unique to sexual minorities.
Given that sexual minorities are reported as having equal or higher rates of injurious intimate partner violence than their heterosexual counterparts, more work is needed to identify unique determinates of injurious IPV among sexual minorities.
This study will employ multilevel modeling to examine contextual factors associated with injurious IPV among sexual minorities and heterosexuals. Individual incidents of IPV will be nested within counties, and those counties will be nested within states. Findings will shed light on the complex interplay of factors contributing to injurious intimate partner violence among sexual minorities, providing clear directions for future policy, programming, and research.
