Abstract:

Food is the most critical, basic need in Maslow's hierarchy. Developing sustainable food systems tops the global innovation agenda. By the year 2050, the world's population could exceed 9.5 billion. Human activities and needs are utilizing resources at unsustainable rates and creating inadvertent environmental issues. The ARS Office of National Programs at the USDA is leading a Partnerships for Data Innovation (PDI) project. PDI will transform how data are collected, stored, utilized, and interfaced with AI, statistics, and data science. It will include scientific and observational data collected by the USDA and its partners. Thanks to the inaugurate ASA/ACM/AMS/IMS/MAA/SIAM Science & Technology Policy Fellowship sponsored by AAAS, this session will bring together leaders in industry, government, and academia to showcase our unique and rapidly evolving innovations, including cool AI, GIS, and statistics techniques. We will discuss the challenges (some parallel to EHRs and census data) and opportunities for our big data and agricultural research to feed the world. It will be an eye-opener to the audience with wonders of the fellowship and a model for AI-Statistics Big Data research.
