Abstract:

The Australian Cancer Atlas is an online, interactive presentation of modeled incidence and relative survival for twenty cancers across >2000 small areas. It is underpinned by a Bayesian spatial model which provides point and interval estimates as well as probabilities of exceeding the national average. In this presentation, we discuss key issues arising in the choice and implementation of the model and visualizations. We also explore two different ways multivariate models have subsequently been applied: examining correlation between melanoma thickness levels; and a meta-analysis of the derived estimates as a mechanism for secondary inference, for example to assess potential differences in incidence between urban and rural areas.
