Abstract:

In mathematical statistics courses, assessment is often used to evaluate student learning, but how could we use it to also promote conceptual understanding? In this presentation, we will explore this question by sharing several examples of homework and exam questions, projects, and other assignments that challenge students to think in different and novel ways. We will also discuss general strategies for transforming traditional assessments and share student reflections about the types of learning these opportunities provided.
