Abstract:

Mentoring is essential to the growth of statisticians in all employment levels and sectors. Junior statisticians may struggle with how to initiate good mentoring relationships and how to make the most of their sessions. Mentoring is important for mid-career and senior statisticians for continued professional growth and to give back to the profession. Midcareer professionals struggle with dual roles of mentor and mentee and the lack of mentoring training. Senior researchers may struggle to find mentors as they move into leadership roles. The panel ties in with the 2020 JSM theme on inclusion and on data for good and builds on the previous themes of leadership and impact. This session will disseminate insight and advice on these issues from known leaders in the field across the different employment sectors in which statisticians work. Issues such as seeking out peer and senior mentors, becoming a mentor, and making the most of a mentoring relationship will be addressed. Panelists will describe themselves and their views on mentoring. Prepared questions designed to elicit a concise variety of perspectives will precede questions and answers from the audience.
