Abstract:

In this talk, we will highlight historical examples where the use of statistical graphics and visualization helped to save lives, such as John Snow's cholera map and Florence Nightingale's efforts to improve the healthcare in the military, using her coxcomb chart. These are by far the two best known cases where statistical graphics helped to save lives. In addition to these two cases, we present additional, less known, cases where statistical graphics, often combined with maps, also helped to save lives.
