At most universities, mathematical statistics is a multi-course sequence that covers all of probability first, followed by statistical inference. As a result, students may miss the interconnections between probability and statistical inference. At Cal Poly, we have redesigned our mathematical statistics sequence to interleave probability and statistical inference topics. For example, shortly after learning expected value (a topic in probability), students apply the concept to evaluate the bias of estimators (a topic in statistical inference). This talk surveys our approach and highlights what we learned.
