Carnegie Mellon’s Integrated Statistics Learning Environment (ISLE) is a “browser-based interactive statistics and data analysis platform” that combines many powerful real-time operations, including surveys, a sketchpad for lecture notes, and (coding-free) data exploration and report writing. Using ISLE in class facilitates independent, active learning while also allowing the instructor to simultaneously track student progress and understanding, and the ISLE repository contains many freely available materials (e.g., labs). This talk will focus on a complementary use of ISLE: as the base of a fully flipped Intro Stats course (a 35-person course for majors and non-majors at a liberal arts college). Before each class, students completed video lessons, including comprehension questions and data tasks, which were created by the instructor and hosted on our ISLE course page. We will discuss lessons learned, student feedback, and suggestions for others who may want to use ISLE within a flipped course.
