The discussion will target current students, postdoctoral associates and junior faculty members who are looking for—or have recently gotten—a statistics or biostatistics academic job. The first part of the discussion will include the key recommendations for securing such a job. I will share my experiences of serving as a Chair and member on multiple search committees for biostatistics and statistics faculty positions, including consulting positions. The second part of the discussion will include the key recommendations for junior biostatisticians and statisticians. Specifically, we will address the key obstacles and effective strategies for shifting perceptions from “challenges” to “opportunities”. What did motivate me to propose such a topic for a roundtable discussion? I believe that informal setting of a roundtable discussion is ideal for addressing professional development topics at the JSM. This event will provide an opportunity to engage students and recent graduates in JSM activities. The participants will enhance their knowledge about biostat/stat academic positions, commonly used evaluation criteria, and how to make the best of their junior faculty years.
