The primary mission areas at Sandia National Laboratories are enhancing US national security, enriching US technology and preserving global peace. In service to this mission, statistical projects at Sandia encompass many different applications. This talk outlines the role of statistics in various focus areas at Sandia. One way statisticians work to advance Sandia’s primary mission is through research areas such as nuclear deterrence, cyber security, electrical grid resilience, and nuclear nonproliferation. Another thrust area is centered on high risk, cutting edge research through the Laboratory Directed Research and Development program. This program allows the development of early-stage innovative ideas that might not otherwise secure funding through conventional sources, but possess a high potential payoff. Finally, in partnership with key universities, Sandia supports university research and helps train the next generation of statisticians. We address various applications at Sandia National Laboratories under each of these key areas, and discuss how the efforts of statisticians are critical to their success.
