Abstract #307744
Title: Using Paradata to Explore Users Pathways Through Web Surveys
Author(s): Renee Ellis*
Companies: U.S. Census Bureau
Keywords: Paradata; web surveys; survey methodology; data visualization

Web paradata are data about the process of collecting information via a web survey. These data have many uses, including survey monitoring, question evaluation, instrument usability evaluation, and detecting suspicious reporting activity; however, beyond completion rate and total-time-in-instrument, there is little research on the start-to-finish experience of a web survey user. Here, we look at each user session as the sum of its parts. We use web paradata from a household survey to prepare data visualizations to explore common and uncommon paths users take through web survey instruments. We hypothesize that some clear patterns will emerge that may be used to improve the survey process.
