Abstract #307444
Title: Educational Fun at Your Fingertips!
Author(s): Dennis Pearl* and Lawrence M Lesser*

Keywords: Education; Teaching; Online; Engagement; Anxiety; Edutainment
Abstract:

Educational fun enhances statistics teaching and outreach (see Lesser article in Sept. 2017 Amstat News), with putative benefits of reducing anxiety and increasing motivation, engagement, learning, and retention. This poster shows instructors broad availability of educational songs, cartoons, videos, quotes, games, poems, and more as we tour the searchable, curated, and free collection of some 800 fun items at www.CAUSEweb.org/fun. To help make materials readily usable, this collection has special features such as searchability by topic and/or keywords, annotations on source and educational usage, recordings as well as lyrics for the song collection (so instructors without performance skills can simply press “play”), and a quote collection with an unusually high fraction from women authors. This poster shows examples of materials and provides practical tips on class usage. We also provide a handout to introduce the research on as well as the practice of using fun in teaching statistics. Importantly, we discuss our ideas and seek your advice on how we can further enhance this collection to better support your pedagogy.
