Abstract:

The Teaching and Learning Research Center (TLRC) focuses on promoting excellence in research on teaching and learning at the University of California, Irvine. Through collaborative, large scale, cross-discipline, and longitudinal research projects the TLRC focuses on the effective analysis of "big data" in education research, and has important applications for the already established field of Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER; NRC, 2012), a promising avenue for improving student performance and retention in STEM (García-Peñalvo et al., 2017). In this session, we will take advantage of the electronic poster multimedia capabilities. Focusing on student equity, trajectories in STEM, and graduation success, we will 1) introduce quantile regression methods developed for evaluating student equity in STEM; 2) show COMPASS dashboards and visualizations developed for advisors, campus administrators, and faculty; 3) outline the data access given to senate faculty to expand University data capabilities and leverage institutional data to inform UCI efforts to improve student success; and 4) present our Academic Success Research Fellows program as an effective collaboration to build interest in research on teaching and learning.
