Abstract:

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) infers column averaged CO2 (XCO2) by measuring spectral radiance at very fine spatial resolutions (~1km in diameter). One of the fundamental uses of its data product is carbon flux inversion modelling, which relies on OCO-2’s global coverage to produce detailed maps of CO2 sources and sinks. Due to computational constraints, global flux inversion modelling requires data at courser resolution (~1 degree in diameter) than that provided by OCO-2. Current methods of aggregating OCO-2 data fail to take into account the underlying spatial process, as well as having no consideration of the associated uncertainty. We propose a method of producing 1-degree averages by modelling the XCO2 measurement as a gaussian process. After inferring the spatial covariance using a local variogram, we produce locally kriged block averages with their corresponding uncertainties.
