Abstract:

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is pursuing its own “Electricity Initiative,” wherein they are aiming to improve their offering of electricity data and analysis to better monitor the accelerating evolution of the electricity industry and to reach the same impactful level as its offerings for natural gas and petroleum data and analysis. Electricity is a unique commodity requiring near instantaneous matching of supply and demand, an idiosyncrasy that makes electricity analysis difficult to bring to life, especially for non-expert audiences. As part of this Electricity Initiative, one new product has been conceived: an “RTO/Wholesale Data Portal,” in which EIA collocates and demystifies the most salient public information available for the nation’s wholesale electricity markets. This project constitutes a nexus of data, analysis, and technical work across several teams. This presentation will highlight some of the data and analysis that demonstrate the value of this project, as well as some of the Portal’s initial content.
