Many students in the health sciences take a module in IRB ethics, but these modules often present ethics as a list of dos and don'ts with a narrow, research-based focus. As the breadth of ethically dubious data practices in both the public and private sectors has been uncovered, the need for a broader discussion of data ethics has become clear. It is more important than ever for students to understand the risks that unprincipled data analyses pose to individuals and society at large. At this roundtable, we will discuss approaches to teach students in biostatistics and the health sciences about larger ethical issues in statistics and data science. By directly addressing topics such as data collection, analysis, interpretation, and use, we hope to prepare students to confront ethical data issues in an increasingly data-driven society.
