Biostatistics units play a crucial role in academic medical centers, contributing to both the research infrastructure and the intellectual environment in academic medical centers. A thriving unit requires leadership at the school-level to recruit and retain talented faculty and staff to develop, lead and engage in such units with (1) the primary purpose of practicing data science, (2) sufficient resources to grow and lead data science-focused research programs and (3) clear trajectories for promotion that appropriately recognize the intellectual contributions resulting from the practice of data science and the engagement in team science. Discussions will focus on (1) variation in consultative- vs collaborative-driven philosophies (2) funding strategies, (3) possible career trajectories for faculty and staff, (4) the development of robust research agendas for data science faculty that embrace team science, and (5) the role of the unit in training the next generation of statistical scientists in the practice of data science and in the mentoring of clinical and translational investigators.
