This paper analyzes data the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Survey of Consumer Views on Debt, the first comprehensive and nationally representative data on consumers’ experiences with debt collection. The survey sample was selected from de-identified credit records, and the talk will highlight how administrative data and surveys complement one another. The paper also highlights survey results including how many and how frequently consumers are contacted in the past year by someone collecting a debt, the types of debts collected, and consumers’ perceptions of the debt collection process.
