Abstract #304631 Presentation
Title: Statistical Thinking and Analysis for Large and Complex Data
Author(s): Joanne Wendelberger*
Companies: Los Alamos National Laboratory
Keywords: data science; functional data analysis; change detection
Abstract:

Analyses of increasingly large and complex data sets require a diverse set of skills including statistical methods, data analysis, data management, and computational tools. Statistical thinking can be critical in identifying appropriate populations, selecting methods for analysis, and constructing appropriate data sets. Problems encountered at Los Alamos National Laboratory will be discussed that have required delving into different areas of statistics to address functional data, multiple disparate data streams, change detection, and other statistical challenges. Often, these problems require thoughtful data manipulation and engagement with experts from the broader Data Science community as well as subject matter experts.
