Abstract:

With data booming in almost all disciplines, the present is the best time ever for statisticians in terms of career development. In addition to technical skills such as developing innovative statistical methods, the development of soft skills from communication with colleagues on new statistical ideas to collaboration with non-statisticians, is by no means key to career advancement of a statistician. In this talk, I will focus on how to facilitate collaboration with non-statisticians when there are different opinions using examples from daily work as a pharmaceutical statistician such as design of clinical trials and development of protocols, etc. There are three points to consider when trying to persuade or influence a non-statistician collaborator: • Firstly, listen to them carefully to understand their concerns and real interest; • Secondly, do our homework to address the collaborator’s concerns by aligning the interests of both parties, talking their language and giving intuitive illustrations; • Lastly, in the long run, build trust and influence the collaborators by doing the above two items consistently.
