Recent work has resulted in a detailed picture of the behavior of Gaussian random matrices with independent entries and arbitrary variance pattern. These developments rely fundamentally on the understanding of the suprema of certain Gaussian processes. I will describe recent results in this direction and some of the techniques behind the proofs.
