Abstract:

Mobile phone data such as Call Detail Records have been proven to be valuable sources of information that contribute to the improvement of public health and welfare in low- and middle-income countries via the fields of population dynamics, human mobility, epidemiology, and disaster response. This data source also provides the opportunity to revolutionise the production of national statistics by providing rapidly-updating information on the locations and movements of a country's population, thus helping to accelerate improvements in public health and services in countries of all income levels. Over the world, an increasing number of organisations in both the private and public sectors, as well as inter-governmental organisations, are starting to acquire access and analyse these data. In this session we discuss our efforts to provide a set of open standards for methodology and open source software for the analysis of aggregated anonimized mobile phone data. Open standards ensure the quality of the information being generated, and also to ensure the existence of transparent processes where algorithms and methods are open and verifiable to the public.
