Abstract:

Women hold half of all professional level jobs however, they are underrepresented in leadership positions in academia and in high-tech industries(1). Leaders come in all different sizes, shapes, and – most importantly – styles. Women often lead differently than men. As a leader, you need to command respect, but a large part of that respect comes from the respect you pay to those you are leading. You need to recognize your strengths and weaknesses; you must be honest about both. Leaders must learn to manage across multiple strata defined by: rank, discipline, school, audience, and culture. Keeping in mind as much as possible the goals and expectations of all parties is central to effectiveness. We will discuss strategies for communicating across these divides and developing partnerships for success. This session will feature experts who will share their experiences after starting a career in the field of statistics and later transitioned to prominent leadership positions. Perspectives will span academia, government, pharmaceutical companies and independent consulting companies.
