Abstract:

Data are generated at an unprecedented pace and in overwhelming volumes and variety today. The methods and tools to analyze such data are also evolving at a dizzying pace. We need to continually acquire and expand our set of professional skills. It is a challenge to stay properly informed on a wide range of statistical methods, computational tools, project management skills, and other relevant topics. As innovation takes place in academia, business, industry and government, cross-pollination among these sectors is critical. In this panel discussion, statistical experts from these different sectors will share their professional experiences and views on what constitute the most valued sets of skills necessary to be successful in their respective sectors and what strategies might facilitate successful professional development. Although the specific challenges facing a statistician in each of these sectors may vary greatly, it is clear that we all aspire to being valued team members and that each of us can greatly influence the direction and conduct of the research projects that employ our expertise.
