Abstract:

Statisticians and data scientists, in collaboration with domain experts, help solve a wide range of problems in academia, business, and government. To become effective interdisciplinary collaborators, statisticians and data scientists must develop a broad range of technical skills (in addition to important communication and professional skills). What sorts of statistical skills should educators focus on to maximize the impact that their students will have in collaboration with domain experts? What are the best practices for teaching such statistical skills? How can educators best train students to continue to grow their statistical skills beyond the classroom? In this talk, we consider some of the technical aspects of statistics and data science most impactful to help solve a wide range of problems in academia, business, and government.
