Title: Overcoming the Barriers of Entry into Data Science for Non-Traditional Learners with Cloud Computing
Author(s): Shannon E. Ellis*
Companies: UCSD
Keywords: data science; education; MOOCs
Abstract:

Getting a job in data science has historically required an expensive education, a costly computer, having connections in the field, and physically being in the place where data science jobs are. We set out to minimize these barriers and enable entry into data science for non-traditional learners. To do so, we have developed Chromebook Data Science (CBDS), a set of 12 free online courses to teach the basics of data science. These courses can be taken by anyone who can follow instructions and, thanks to cloud computing, anyone who has access to the Internet. Additionally, we have developed CBDS+, a supplement to CBDS that provides free laptops, in-person tutoring, online support, job search assistance, and payment to complete the program to individuals from historically underserved populations. With CBDS and CBDS+, learners who have not historically had access to data science education and jobs will be able to enter into the exciting and lucrative field of data science.
