Abstract:

Statistics and data science collaboration laboratories (“stat labs”) that: 1) train students to become effective interdisciplinary collaborators, 2) serve as statistics and data science infrastructure to collaborate with local researchers, businesses, and policy makers, and 3) teach short courses and workshops to improve statistical literacy and data skills widely can become “engines for development” that enable collaborative statisticians to transform evidence into action for maximum impact. We will describe a complete training program for statistics and data science students that other stat labs can implement, structures and procedures for effective collaboration at large scales, and examples of short courses and workshops from members of the global LISA 2020 Network of stat labs in developing countries. We will share case studies from the 10+ stat labs in the LISA 2020 Network on how they are transforming evidence to action to maximize the impact of statisticians to benefit society and improve development outcomes, and how consulting and collaborative statisticians from the West can become involved in maximizing the impacts of these efforts.
