Abstract:

My close collaboration with Alastair dates back to 1978 when we were both visiting the University of Southampton at the invitation of Fred Smith to work on a project related to the analysis of sample survey data. We were unable to collaborate in recent years due to Alastair's serious health problems. In this talk I will highlight some contributions of Alastair prior to 1998 that had a major impact on sample surveys. The topics I will present include foundational issues related to inference, optimality of estimators, time series models for repeated surveys, changing strata and probabilities, analysis of categorical survey or clustered data and interviewer variance for domain comparisons. Alastair continued his research on the analysis of survey data jointly with his colleague Thomas Lumley at the University of Auckland.
