Abstract #330895
Title: Putting the Green in Green Engineering with Data for Good
Author(s): David Corliss*
Companies: Peace-Work
Keywords: Green; Engineering; DataForGood
Abstract:

Green Engineering is an important and growing area with a great need for statistical expertise. This Round Table discussion will present opportunities to get involved in green engineering projects beyond the workplace volunteering in Data For Good projects. Do-it-yourself engineering projects, coaching student project teams, and individual consulting for community groups and NGO's can put your statistical expertise to use in making a cleaner, safer environment. Green engineering projects need to partner with statisticians to find the best solutions. Misinformation from amateur "research" needs to be answered by professionals with analytic expertise. A pollution-eating robot can swim across a lake but machine learning algorithm can teach it to tell trash from trout. In all these ways and more, statisticians are needed to support green engineering projects on a consulting or even volunteer basis. Come share your experiences and learn from others about ways you can put your statistical expertise to use in green engineering projects.
