Abstract:

Data scientists are expected to have many skills upon entry into the field. The technical skills are derived from computer science, statistics, and mathematics. In addition, they are also expected to have soft skills such as project management and business domain knowledge. Kennesaw State University developed the Analytics and Data Science Institute to train Ph.D. students in the Analytics and Data Science program. The Institute houses the Center for Statistics and Analytical Research (CSAR) which develops collaborative research laboratories sponsored by industry. CSAR grew out of the traditional consulting environment with a focus on publishable research involving real-world problems. The Ph.D. students work with teams of students from other graduate programs. They are partnered with faculty members who serve as the Principal Investigators to conduct research that is implemented by the students on the team. The implementation requires consistent communication between all of the parties involved, including the sponsor. Thus far, the projects have resulted in several conference presentations, patent applications, and manuscripts in development, in press, or published.
