Title: Implementing the HyFlex (Hybrid-Flexible) Model of Course Delivery in a Probability and Statistics Course for Engineers and Scientists
Author(s): Jackie Miller* and Melinda E Baham
Companies: University of Michigan and Baham Consulting
Keywords: HyFlex; hybrid-flexible; alternative lecture models
Abstract:

The HyFlex (hybrid-flexible) model lets students choose how they attend lecture (in person or synchronously and remotely) each day based on personal decisions and experiences. Prior research at Ohio State found the most important student gains were affective in nature. Research on the HyFlex model for Stats 250 at the University of Michigan (UM) showed similar results. In Fall 2017, the HyFlex model moved to Michigan's Stats 412, a calculus-based probability and statistics course typically taken by students in the College of Engineering and graduate students across the university. Data collected in Stats 412 during the 2017-2018 academic year will be compared to previously collected data. Tips and suggestions for adopting a HyFlex model will be discussed, as will student outcomes, both with respect to affective measures and course performance.
