We present a novel functional forecasting technique for a long term forecasting purpose with cohort effects. Age-specific mortality curves were obtained using nonparametric smoothing methods. We apply functional time series models on age-specific cancer mortality rates for patients in different age groups, and forecast their mortality rates using exponential smoothing state-space models with damping.
