Abstract:

Having previously taught statistics at the University of Oregon for seven years, in 2008 I began to explore the world of online teaching. I began by dipping my toe in the water with The Institute for Statistics Education, also known as Statistics.com. Then, just over a year later, I waded deeper with the Open Learning division of Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, Canada. By now I was hooked, so I eagerly dove in head-first when the opportunity to work for Penn State World Campus came up. By this time, I'd left face-to-face teaching behind and I was fully online. I continue to teach for all three institutions today. I find teaching online rewarding and liberating in equal measure. It's not without its unique challenges of course and this presentation will discuss how I've designed and taught online courses over the last decade to best serve students while also providing a stimulating teaching career.
