Abstract:
|
Depression level in patients with arthritis may be contaminated by their arthritis status especially on self-reported somatic questions like fatigue and sleep disturbance. We are interested in examining the appropriateness for the the Centers for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CESD) scale as a screening tool on general population with arthritis. We fit structural equation models (SEM)to the CESD data extracted from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study (NHEFS) and examined the direct effect of arthritis on each question in the CESD,controlling the latent depression level. Results showed that arthritis had a statistically significant effect on five questions in the CESD scale. However the magnitude of effect size were very small. So we conclude that the CESD scale can be used as a screening tool for the general arthritis population.
