Title: The Past, Present, and Future of Complex-Valued fMRI Activation

Since the inception of Fourier encoded MRI including fast gradient-echo echo-planar image acquisition for fMRI, it has been well-known among magnetic resonance Physicists and Engineers that reconstructed images and time series are truly complex-valued (real and imaginary or magnitude and phase). The original measurements by the machine are roughly complex-valued spatial frequencies that are inverse Fourier transformed to produce complex-valued images and voxel time series. However, early in the development of fMRI, the Cartesian real and imaginary images were converted to polar magnitude and phase images with the phase images discarded before statistical analysis. In the last two decades, there have been statistical models and engineering advances that have enabled the analyis of complex-valued time series. Analysis of complex-valued has been shown to have increased desirable statistical properties in addition to increased information about the physiology transpiring within the voxel. I will review past and present efforts along with future opportunities of complex-valued time series analysis for Statisticians.
