Abstract:

Undergraduate research projects are needed in order to have a strong and active undergraduate research program. Establishing pipelines for a succession of projects makes sustaining an undergraduate research program much easier. In addition, faculty participation can be reduced if there are hurdles to finding appropriate projects for undergraduate students. In a college or university setting, there are departments and divisions that collect and use data to make internal decisions and evaluate metrics of student success. The offices in charge of those analyses are a natural source for undergraduate research projects. There are many benefits to establishing partnerships with these offices. First, students enjoy working on data that directly relates to their lives on campus. Second, students also enjoy having input and insight into how decisions on campus are made. And finally, these partnerships can grow into larger research projects that can benefit faculty, staff, and students. This talk will explain the beginnings and results of one such partnership between the Department of Statistics and the Division of Academic and Student Affairs at North Carolina State University.
