Transportation agencies need data regarding the movement of goods and people to ensure that transportation investment decisions result in efficient, sustainable, and safe travel. Data collection technology advances over the last ten years resulted in opportunities for acquiring detailed travel information that can be used to support these refined data needs. As such, the detailed travel data frequently contains personally identifiable information (PII), which is protected by federal law as well as by professional and ethical standards. This document provides descriptions and reviews of spatial and temporal data anonymization methods that offer privacy protection while maximizing the value of the information necessary for the design and development of efficient transportation systems.
