Abstract:

Often in upper level or graduate statistics, a take home exam (or a take home portion) is an appropriate method to evaluate students. When administering take home exams, it is important to encourage students to do their own work. One approach to ensure that students do their own work is to create a custom exam for each student. In this poster, I will describe how I use R Markdown to create custom exams for an upper level Analysis of Variance class. The process includes the creation of the exam, data sets in .csv format, and an answer key for each exam. Each exam is numbered, with the exams randomly handed out to each student. Features of the system include guaranteeing certain types of results and selecting one question from a bank of questions. Since each exam comes with an answer key, the ability to help students with questions and grading is relatively simple. Students are required to complete the exam in R Markdown, which also helps in the ease of grading. The success of the system has been high, with zero student complaints and little evidence of student collaboration.
