Abstract:
|
Variable-intensity astronomical sources are the results of complex physical processes. Abrupt changes in source intensity are typically accompanied by sudden changes in the wavelength distribution and light curve. To model the photon counts, we first partition them into different time segments, where the meeting point between any two consecutive segments is considered as a change point. Then counts within each segment is modeled as a homogeneous marked Poisson processes, where photon wavelengths are regarded as marks and are modeled using a Gaussian density mixture (GDM). The number of change points and their locations, and the number of mixture components in each GDM are assumed unknown and automatically chosen by the minimum description length principle. We will apply this method to a practical analysis of the ultra-fast rotating stars.
