Abstract #328801
Title: A New Approach to Generate Dorling Cartograms

Abstract:

Cartogram is a variation of the choropleth map that reshapes the polygons in proportion to a numerical thematic variable. Dorling cartogram, which abstractly represents all the polygons by circles, is one of the commonly used non-contiguous cartograms. The limitation of Dorling cartogram is that neither shape or topology is maintained. In this work another limitation which is always neglected will be discussed. The problem is that circles can interchange their positions when extraordinary contrast exists in a neighborhood. A new approach is proposed to reduce the circle disorder error. In the new approach the neighborhood is re-defined by triangles and the angles are preserved as much as possible. The new approach is programmed in R and applied to areal data examples.
